Undercarriage
An equipment undercarriage is the complex lower assembly supporting and moving heavy machinery like excavators and dozers, comprising parts like tracks (shoes, chains), rollers, idlers, and sprockets that distribute weight, provide traction, and allow movement over rough terrain. It's crucial for machine stability, performance, and longevity, requiring regular inspection for wear and tear on components like track pads, chains, rollers, and tensioners to prevent costly breakdowns.
Track Shoes (Pads) are metal plates that contact the ground, providing traction and support.
Track Chains are interconnected links that hold the shoes, wrapping around sprockets and idlers.
Rollers (Bottom & Top) support the machine's weight, with bottom rollers carrying it and top rollers supporting the track frame.
Idlers (Front/Rear) are large wheels that guide the track chain and maintain tension.
Sprockets are gear-like wheels that engage the track chain, driven by the final drive to propel the machine.
Track Tensioner is a hydraulic or spring-loaded system that keeps the track at the correct tightness.
